Warm apple, dates and oat purée

What is Fall without a little trip to the local orchard for some wholesome family apple picking? Actually, truth be told, this was my first time ever going on such an excursion and it was FUN! Marko had a blast being carried around in the crisp air, touching the big red apples in his hands, watching us pick and fill our bags until they were too full to hold.

After lugging our 12 pound bag of apples home, my sweet husband got to baking a delicious apple crumble for us filling the house with warm aromas of cinnamon, maple and apple. YUM!

With that smell in the air, I decided to make a little something for Marko. I combined apples, oats and dates, flavoured them with a generous amount of cinnamon and pinch of cloves and nutmeg. Smelled so good I had to sneak a small bowl for myself, to taste test of course! 😉

Give it a whirl, I’m pretty sure this tops Marko’s fave meals thus far.

Apple, dates and oats puree


2 medium apple, peeled, cored and thinly chopped
3 dates
1 cup of oats
2 cups of water (plus extra to soak dates)
1 tsp of cinnamon
1/4 tsp of cloves
pinch of nutmeg

  1. Soak dates in a bowl of boiling water for approximately 10 minutes or until they can easily be pierced with a fork.
  2. In a saucepan, bring the two cups of water to a boil. Add the oats, apples and spices. Stir and leave on high heat until water begins to boil again. Reduce heat to simmer.
  3. Let cook for approximately 10 minutes, until oats  have absorbed most of the water. Remove from heat.
  4. Place oat mixture and dates in a food processor and purée until desired consistency. Serve warm.
